Plastic wrap is one of the most valuable items I’ve taken from my kitchen to my plant room.
One day long ago I was struggling to root a little begonia. I asked the seller and he gave me the best hint ever!
Put Saran wrap around the container and it keeps the humidity in especially at the top.
BEST ADVICE EVER!
It solves the problem of the moss drying out too quickly. When the saran wrap is used you can see little beads of water in the cup. It creates a perfect moist environment.
I have found the I can take the saran wrap off to check the roots. And straighten it out to re-use it. But it loses it’s stickyness. So I’ve been putting the cup with the wrap into another cup and that keeps it in place.
It was a great solution for this melano philodendron because the roots were growing out really high out of the leaf/stem area. So I wanted to keep them moist and encourage them.
Wrap the plastic around the stem.
Put it in a 2nd cup to hold the plastic in place.
It works for all of the mediums including moss, LECA, perlite and water. I had taken a few Gabby philodendron cuttings and they were tiny and had trouble keeping them in the little containers of water. (You know when you try to balance them and they fall in?!)
Saran wrap again provided the perfect solution! I took a recycled plastic container. (A shortening stick had come in it.). I put water in it, then covered it with saran wrap and poked holes in the saran wrap to stick the cuttings in.
The result was crazy! The little Gabby’s not only had roots under the plastic in the water but also above the plastic. All the nodes popped out roots. I had to cut the plastic to free each cutting. It was SO gratifying and fun!
Little Gabby cuttings in a butter cube shaped container. I put water in, covered in plastic then poked holes for the cuttings
There were roots everywhere! Under the plastic in the water, above the plastic … so I had to use a scissor to cut the lil Gabby’s free.
